How to read your kundali: the twelve houses

A birth chart looks like a diagram you need somebody else to interpret. It is twelve rooms and nine occupants, and once you know what each room is for, most of a reading is legible on your own.

A kundali is drawn as a grid of twelve compartments, which is the thing that makes it look impenetrable. It is not. It is twelve areas of life and nine grahas distributed among them, and the whole of a basic reading is: which graha is in which area, and in whose sign.

The first house decides everything else

The first house — the lagna, or ascendant — is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born.

It matters more than any other single fact in the chart, because it is the reference point the other eleven are counted from. Move the lagna by one sign and every other house moves with it, and the whole reading changes.

This is why a birth time is not optional. The lagna advances through all twelve signs in twenty-four hours, roughly one every two hours. An hour's error moves it half a sign; a few hours' error moves it entirely. A chart cast from a guessed time is a chart of somebody else.

What the twelve cover

  • First — the body, temperament, how you arrive in a room
  • Second — what you accumulate: money, possessions, also speech and family of origin
  • Third — siblings, courage, short journeys, your own effort
  • Fourth — home, mother, land, inner peace
  • Fifth — children, intelligence, creativity, and what you did to deserve any of it
  • Sixth — illness, debt, enemies, service and daily work
  • Seventh — marriage, partnership, anybody you deal with as an equal
  • Eighth — longevity, inheritance, upheaval, what is hidden
  • Ninth — fortune, father, teachers, belief, long journeys
  • Tenth — career, standing, what you are publicly known for
  • Eleventh — gains, networks, elder siblings, what arrives
  • Twelfth — loss, expenditure, seclusion, sleep, what is given away

Opposite houses are read as pairs, and it is worth noticing which: first and seventh, self and other. Second and eighth, what you hold and what is taken. Fourth and tenth, private life and public one.

The grahas in them

Nine grahas move through those twelve houses: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the two lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu.

A first reading is a sentence per placement. Saturn in the tenth: a career built slowly, by endurance, with recognition arriving late rather than early. Venus in the fourth: a home that matters to you and that you want to be beautiful.

Two refinements turn that sentence from generic into yours. Which sign the graha occupies — a graha in its own sign or exalted acts strongly, in its sign of debilitation with difficulty. And which houses that graha rules in your chart, since it carries those affairs with it wherever it sits.

Sidereal, not tropical

One thing worth knowing before you compare charts from different sources.

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, measured against the fixed stars, while Western astrology uses the tropical one, measured from the equinox. The two have drifted about twenty-four degrees apart — the ayanamsha — which is most of a sign.

This is why your Vedic Moon sign is very often one sign back from the sun sign you know. Neither system is wrong; they are measuring from different origins, and a chart is only readable within one of them.

Read your own

Our kundali casts the chart from a real ephemeris rather than a lookup table, and shows the houses, every graha with its sign and dignity, your nakshatra, the running dasha period and the doshas — each one saying which placement produced it.

Start with three things: your lagna, where your Moon is, and which graha sits in the tenth. That is enough to make most of the rest of the page mean something.
