The Moon rises about fifty minutes later each day, so roughly once a month a date holds no moonrise at all — a dash there is the calendar, not a gap.

How the panchang is worked out

The Hindu day runs from sunrise to the next sunrise, so the tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana are read at sunrise for the place shown, not at midnight. Each is listed as it runs through that day: “until” is when one gives way to the next, and “to next sunrise” means it is still running when the day ends.

A tithi is each 12° the Moon gains on the Sun, and a karana is half of one; both come from the gap between them, so the ayanamsha cancels out. The nakshatra is the Moon’s sidereal longitude in 27 equal parts, and the yoga is the sum of the Sun’s and Moon’s sidereal longitudes, also in 27 parts. Sidereal longitudes use the Lahiri ayanamsha.

Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal each take one eighth of the daylight between that day’s sunrise and sunset, and which eighth depends on the weekday. That is why they move through the year rather than sitting at a fixed hour.

Abhijit and Vijaya are the eighth and eleventh of the fifteen muhurtas that divide the daylight. Brahma Muhurta runs from two muhurtas before sunrise to one before, Godhuli is one muhurta centred on sunset, and Nishita is the fifteenth of the night centred on its midpoint.

Varjyam and Amrit Kaal are measured inside the nakshatra running at sunrise, in ghatis, each a sixtieth of it. Both last four ghatis: Varjyam starts where the Muhurta Chintamani places it for that nakshatra, and Amrit Kaal twenty ghatis later. They are shown only when that nakshatra ends within the day.

Every time is on the clock of New Delhi, India, wherever you are reading from. The place is the birth place in your saved details, from your account or a kundali or Western chart made during this visit, and New Delhi when there are none.
