Where is yours?

All eight directions, with the verdict for each. Choose yours.

How to check yours

  1. 1

Stand at the centre of the kitchen.

  2. 2

Hold the phone flat, top edge pointing at the stove.

  3. 3

That direction is where the stove sits within the kitchen.

Standing at the stove instead? Point the phone at the middle of the kitchen: the stove is in the opposite direction.

Any phone compass will do. Hold it flat and away from steel, speakers and wiring, which pull the needle. The AstroGlimps app reads it for you and warns when something nearby interferes.

Remedies for each direction that is not ideal
Stove in the NorthAvoid
  • Move the burner to the south-east of the platform. Even a shift along the same counter can bring the flame back toward its proper corner
  • Keep the north side of the kitchen light and uncluttered. Reducing weight and heat in the north eases the strain on this zone
Stove in the North-EastAvoid
  • Relocate the burner away from the north-east. This placement has no adequate in-place remedy; moving the flame is the only real correction
  • Keep water storage out of the same corner. Separating fire and water sources reduces the elemental conflict in this zone
Stove in the EastOkay
  • Face east while cooking. Cooking toward the sunrise direction compensates for a burner outside the fire corner
Stove in the South-WestAvoid
  • Move the burner toward the south-east. Shifting the flame along the south wall restores it to the fire zone
  • Place something heavy and solid in the south-west. Weight in this corner restores the grounding that an active flame disrupts
Stove in the WestOkay
  • Keep a small salt bowl near the burner. Salt is used to absorb heaviness where the fire element sits out of place
